  • Abstract:
The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine if and to what extent statistically significant relationships existed between salient beliefs of knowledge sharing (perceptions of time cost, losing face, economic reward, reduced workload, knowledge feedback, enhanced personal relationship) and knowledge self-efficacy among members of a state construction association in the Southwest United States. Theory of reasoned action, social exchange theory and self-efficacy theory were the foundation for this study. The following question was presented. “Will (cost or benefit) variables of knowledge sharing significantly correlate to knowledge self-efficacy among U. S. construction workers?”. A survey was sent to 1300 members of a state construction association in the Southwest U. S. and 102 surveys were completed and used for data analysis. Survey questions and measurement tools were provided from Zhang’s study on variables of knowledge sharing behavior in the construction industry. This study arose out of a need, identified by prior literature, to improve construction industry processes by focusing on knowledge management at a micro level. Relationships between each variable and knowledge self-efficacy were evaluated independently using Spearman’s correlation coefficient. Based on the results of the study, it was determined that losing face r (102) = -. 427, p < . 001, knowledge feedback r (102) = . 436, p <. 001, and enhanced personal relationship r (102) = . 456, p < . 001, significantly correlated to knowledge self-efficacy. Keywords. Salient beliefs of knowledge sharing, construction industry, theory of reasoned action, social exchange theory, self-efficacy theory.
